  • Headwaters 

    • Where are the headwaters located?

    • What is the elevation of the headwaters? 

    • Is there a mountain range or lake nearby?

  • Geography

    • What compass direction does your river flow?

    • What states or countries does the river border or pass through?

    • What major cities are on the river? Are these cities known for being ports?

  • Statistics 

    • How long is the river?

    • How wide is the river? 

    • What is the deepest point of the river?

    • How far can someone travel by boat up the river?

    • What is the flow rate?

    • How many dams are on the river?

    • How much economic activity occurs on the river?

  • Uses

    • Is the river used for trade, economic activity, recreation, or profit?

    • Is the river a major source of food? If so, what kinds? If not, why?

    • Is the water potable (drinkable)? If not, then why not?

    • Is the river a source of hydroelectric power?

    • Are there dams on your river? If so, what are they used for?

    • Is this a river people should choose to live near?

    • Are there any major bridges over your River? If so, what are they and why are they there?

  • History

    • Native American History

      • Which Native American tribes originally settled on your river? 

      • Explain and describe the Native American civilization -- how did they thrive? with whom did they trade?

      • When was their first contact with Europeans or the United States? 

      • What are the key events after contact with Europeans?

      • How was the river used by Native Americans?

    • United States History 

      • What historical events took place on or along your river? 

      • Were there any Revolutionary War, War of 1812, or Civil War Battles fought near or along your river? 

      • How was and has the river been used by the United States?

  • Mouth 

    • Where is the mouth? 

    • What body of water does the river empty into?

    • Does the river flow always reach its mouth

    • Does the health of the river affect local drinking water?
    • Are there negative consequences of dams on the river: What are the effects on wildlife? Energy production? Natural Flooding?
    • Does sewage or wastewater threaten the health of your river?
    • How has climate change affected your river?
    • Does pollution threaten the health of your river?
    • What is the urgency to resolve these threats?
  • Solutions
    • Are there proposed solutions to resolve these threats? What are they?
    • How might these solutions be executed?
    • Is there any progress on proposing or executing these solutions?
    • What might be necessary to enact such a solution?
