Created by Michigan State University, Global Edge is skewed slightly towards economic information but does offer concise, fundamental information on the many nation's of the world.

U.S. Department of State: Countries and Regions

This is the State Department's primer on countries and regions. A great place to start building your knowledge on a given country.
